What it is
The reef pontoon is a big anchored platform parked on the outer Great Barrier Reef. You get ferried out from Airlie on a fast catamaran, spend around five hours at the pontoon, then get ferried back. The pontoon has shaded deck space, an underwater observatory built into it, a semi-submersible that runs reef tours every half hour, and a buffet.
The snorkelling is the main event. You step off the back platform into 3 to 12 metres of water over living coral: bommies, schools of fish, reef sharks (harmless), the occasional turtle. Stinger suits in season. Guided snorkel tours for beginners, freestyle swimming for confident snorkellers.
This is the lowest-effort way to see the outer reef from Airlie. You don't need to swim far, there's always somewhere to climb out, and the observatory means non-snorkellers still see the reef. Not the cheapest, not the most rugged. The most accessible.
Why this one
- Only pontoon-based operator from Airlie. All others are roving catamarans
- Good call if you're not confident snorkelling. Structured, assisted, no long distances
- Semi-submersible for non-swimmers. Genuinely shows you the reef
- Full day on the reef, not 2 hours between transfers
- Fully equipped, no extra rental fees
Practical notes
Check-in at Port of Airlie around 7:30am; return 4 to 5pm. Transfer is 90 minutes each way on a fast cat. Can be bumpy if the trade winds are up. Seasickness tablets sold onboard, but take them before you leave.
June to October is the dry season, best visibility, cooler water. November to May brings wet-season rain (reef visibility drops after heavy rain) and stingers. Suits are mandatory. Coral spawning is November's curiosity.
Wheelchair accessible pontoon. Good choice for families with kids who can swim but aren't strong swimmers. Not the right trip for experienced divers who want a boat-based dive day. Ask Serge about those operators.
Ask Serge
- Is Thursday a good day for this?
- Is this better than the 2-night sail for reef?
- Can my 8-year-old snorkel here?
- Do I need a wetsuit or is the stinger suit enough?
- How likely is sea sickness on the transfer?
