What it is
Currumbin Sanctuary is the Gold Coast's long-standing wildlife park. Not a zoo, closer to a working conservation facility. The evening experience starts at 4pm, well after the day crowds have left, and runs through to dusk. You get the grounds largely to yourselves.
The day is shaped around three encounters. The lorikeet free-flight display, which is the sanctuary's signature: hundreds of wild rainbow lorikeets that come in for feeding and land on anything that holds still. A small-group koala encounter with a keeper (you can photograph, not hold, that's Queensland law). And kangaroo hand-feeding, which sounds silly and isn't; they're calm and it's a better animal experience than most wildlife parks deliver.
It's not a zoo tour. It's a quieter, slower visit with a keeper present at each stop, in a sanctuary that does genuine rehabilitation work. Most of the animals here can't be released back.
Why this one
- After-hours access. The park at 5pm without the day crowds
- Keepers present at each encounter, answering real questions
- Koala up-close (photo, not hold. This is Queensland, the law is strict)
- Revenue supports the wildlife hospital that treats 13,000 animals a year
- Good for kids who've been doing adult things all trip
Practical notes
Check-in at the sanctuary main gate by 3:45pm. Sessions run Thursday through Sunday, with daily sessions in school holidays. The lorikeet flight needs reasonable light, so the session timing shifts slightly with sunset.
Wet afternoons still run. The birds fly regardless, encounters happen under cover. Summer afternoons can be hot until the sun drops, so bring water. Lots of walking on flat paths. Fully accessible, strollers welcome.
Not a hold-the-koala experience (banned in QLD). If someone in your group has their heart set on that, the Daintree or North Queensland tours have different options. Message Serge.
Ask Serge
- Can you book this for a family of four with a 6 and 9 year old?
- Is the koala photo really that quick?
- Is Thursday or Sunday better?
- Can I combine this with Springbrook the next day?
- What time does the lorikeet flight actually start in April?
