What it is

Cairns is where most people come to see the Great Barrier Reef for the first time, and this is the standard-bearer trip: a pontoon on Moore Reef, 90 minutes out from Cairns by fast catamaran, five hours on the reef, then home. It's the Cairns equivalent of the Airlie pontoon day, and probably the single most common way visitors experience the GBR.

The pontoon is a big, shaded, anchored platform with an underwater observatory, a semi-submersible that does reef tours every half hour, snorkel access off the back platform, and a dive set-up for intro and certified divers. Fringing reef right below you: coral gardens, fish, reef sharks (harmless), turtles, the occasional giant clam.

It's not the most adventurous reef day on the market (liveaboards and Osprey Reef trips take you further) but it's the best first-reef-trip option, especially if you have kids or non-swimmers in the group.

Why this one

  • Smaller daily guest cap than the largest Cairns operator. Less crowded pontoon
  • Good for mixed groups: snorkellers, non-swimmers, first-time divers all catered for
  • Intro dive option for people who've never dived (no certification needed)
  • Semi-sub included, not an upsell
  • Moore Reef has consistently good coral coverage even after bleaching events

Practical notes

Check-in at Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal around 7:30am; return 5:30pm. Transfer is 90 minutes each way on a fast catamaran. Take seasickness tablets before boarding if you're unsure. The cat has stabilisers and a saloon, so it's manageable for most.

Dry season (May to Oct) has best visibility and cooler water. Wet season (Nov to Apr) means stinger suits, occasional reduced visibility after heavy rain, and warmer water. Coral is alive year-round.

Wheelchair-accessible pontoon. Intro dives are supervised, shallow, and don't require certification. Operator checks medical on the day. Not recommended for pregnancy (dive) or severe ear conditions.

  • Is it worth doing this and the Airlie reef day, are they different?
  • My kid's 7. Can they snorkel on a pool noodle?
