What it is
Byron is a headland; the hinterland is where most of what makes this region interesting actually lives. This tour drives you inland through the Nightcap and Border Ranges: ancient Gondwana-era rainforest, dormant volcanic plugs, waterfalls you can swim in, and the little villages (Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal) where the locals actually eat.
The day is paced. You're not ticking off stops. Two waterfalls, a proper rainforest walk with a guide who knows the trees by name, a sit-down lunch at a hinterland cafe, then a slower drive back through the ridges. Most people come back saying the hinterland was the better half of their Byron trip.
It's a real 4WD tour, not a coach. The operator runs a 10-seat van and gets into roads coaches can't. That matters at the waterfalls, where the tourist stops are crowded and the good ones aren't.
Why this one
- Small van (10 max). You get to waterfalls the coaches don't
- Guides are local residents, not visiting drivers
- Includes lunch and afternoon tea, no extras at checkout
- Rotates between waterfalls based on recent rain. Always the best water on the day
- Gondwana rainforest context from someone who can actually name what you're looking at
Practical notes
Pickup from central Byron accommodation between 8 and 8:30am; return around 3:30 to 4pm. Bring swimmers on under your clothes. The first waterfall stop is usually within the first hour.
Wet season (Dec to Mar) means bigger waterfalls and warmer swimming but more leeches on the rainforest walk (the guide brings salt). Dry season (Apr to Sep) is cooler, fewer bugs, and the swimming holes can be bracing. Both are fine, just different.
Not recommended if you can't manage 20 minutes of uneven track. Message Serge if mobility is a concern. There's a shorter itinerary on request.
Ask Serge
- Is there a spot on this Thursday?
- Can I do this and the surf lesson in the same week?
- Is the waterfall actually swimmable this time of year?
- Do you do hotel pickup from where I'm staying?
- Can you book two spots and note vegetarian lunch?
