What it is

Two hours in the whitewater at Belongil or Clarkes, depending on the wind, on a 7'6" or 8' soft-top that's hard to fall off. You get fifteen minutes of dryland (pop-up technique, ocean safety, how to read a wave you'll actually catch), then the rest of the time in the water, one instructor per six students, corrections in real time.

Most people stand up in the first session. Byron's waves are forgiving and the instructors here have been doing this for years. They push you into the wave, call the pop-up, and haul you back out through the rip. That's the difference between a lesson and hiring a board and hoping.

This is a genuine beginner lesson. If you've surfed before and want to work on technique, ask about the improvers session instead. Same operator, different group.

Why this one

  • Surfing Australia qualified instructors, not backpackers with a whistle
  • 1:6 ratio. You actually get pushed into waves
  • Runs at Belongil when the main beach is too big. They move, they don't cancel
  • Soft-tops and rashies included, no sneaky extras at checkout
  • Two-hour format is the sweet spot. One hour isn't enough, three is too much for beginners

Practical notes

Lessons run at 9am and 11am most days, with a 1pm session added in summer. Meeting point is the school's shopfront in central Byron, a short walk from the main beach. You walk to the beach together with the boards.

Byron is warm enough to surf year-round. Wetsuit tops are offered in winter (June to August) when the water dips to around 20°C. The main beach can close with sharks, weather, or size. They'll relocate to Belongil or Clarkes, both gentle beginner-friendly beaches.

Not suitable for non-swimmers or under-8s. If you're nervous in the ocean, tell the instructor at the start. They'll keep you closer in.

  • Is the 9am or 11am better for learning?
  • Can you book two lessons two days apart?
