What it is
The Noosa Everglades are the upper reaches of the Noosa River, a slow, tannin-stained system that runs through the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park. It's one of only two everglades systems on the planet (the other's in Florida). Dark, mirror-flat water, paperbark forests reflecting cleanly, almost no development, and on a still morning it's genuinely silent.
You paddle upstream for about two and a half hours with a guide, stop for lunch on a floating platform, then drift back. Single kayaks for paddlers who know what they're doing, tandems for anyone newer. The pace is easy. This isn't a workout, it's a slow moving-meditation kind of day.
Most people expect the Everglades to be a side quest and come back saying it was the best day of their Noosa trip.
Why this one
- Only two everglades systems on earth, this is one of them
- Operator has been running this river for 30 years
- Group size capped at 12. No flotilla feel
- Lunch on a floating platform, not a packed sandwich in the kayak
- Pickup included. No getting yourself to Boreen Point
Practical notes
Pickup from Noosa accommodation around 7:30am; return around 2:30pm. The early start matters. The water is glass before the wind picks up around 11am, and the reflections are the whole point.
Winter (May to Sep) is the best time: clear, cool, still mornings, active birdlife. Summer (Dec to Feb) is warmer but often windier by mid-morning and occasionally thundery in the afternoon. They paddle year-round.
Moderate fitness. If you can walk 5km comfortably, you can paddle this. Not suitable for under-10s in singles (tandem with a parent is fine). Message Serge if someone has shoulder issues; the guide can adjust or suggest a shorter option.
Ask Serge
- Is this tour on Tuesday?
- Is a tandem better if I've never kayaked?
- Can my 8-year-old come?
- Is there a shorter version? Half of this is plenty?
- What's a good Noosa dinner after a long day on the water?
