Walks worth lacing boots for.

Australian bush is older than the Alps and the rainforests are older than dinosaurs, which most overseas hikers don't quite expect. Below: the day walks and overnight options Serge actually sends people on.

Private Tour: Blue Mountains Hiking & Nature

Private Tour: Blue Mountains Hiking & Nature

This works well for solo travellers and couples after a genuine nature day, and for families with kids who can comfortably walk a few kilometres. It suits people who want guidance and structure rather than figuring out the Blue Mountains on their own, and who'd rather not drive. The educational angle is real; your guide knows the ecology and can explain what you're seeing. Skip this if you're after a purely leisurely experience or mobility issues make hiking difficult.

Serge's take

What to look for

The Blue Mountains a day from Sydney is the most accessible hit, and the operator who takes you down into the canyon beats the bus that just stops at Echo Point lookouts. Cradle Mountain in Tasmania is a step up; the Overland Track is the headline but the day-walk loops alone are worth flying to Tassie for. Up north, Lamington and Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland have rainforest sections older than most countries, easy to underestimate from the road. Glow-worm walks in the same region are an underrated post-dinner experience. Pattern: distances are deceptive, an Australian "day walk" is almost always longer and hotter than the same European one, hydrate accordingly.
