Reef & snorkel tours, the ones worth the boat ride.

The reef is bigger than most people realise, and most day trips don't get you to the bit you came for. Below: outer-reef cruises, liveaboards, and small-group snorkel days that are actually worth flying for.

Serge's take

What to look for

Cairns and Port Douglas are the launch points; what changes is how far out you go and how many other boats are on the same patch of coral when you arrive. The inner reef is fine for first-timers but the colour gets tired fast where day-tour pontoons sit. Outer-reef and Agincourt operators run smaller boats further out, and a Reefsleep two-day puts you on the reef overnight when the day-trippers have gone home. Whitsundays gets folded in here too because you can hit the Outer Reef from Airlie or Hamilton, plus pair it with Whitehaven. If you only have one reef day in you, take the deeper-water option even if it costs more, you'll see what people fly across the world for.
