Wildlife you'll actually see, not just hope to.

Roadside roos at dusk are real, but the rest takes either luck or a guide who knows the patch. Below: the operators and small-group walks that put you in front of Australian wildlife in habitat, not behind glass.

Serge's take

What to look for

Kangaroo Island is the most concentrated mammal-spotting day in Australia, full stop, and it's worth flying via Adelaide for. Phillip Island's penguin parade is the obvious choice but the Nobbies headland walk before sunset is actually the better window. North of Cairns the Daintree gives you cassowary if you're patient, and the Atherton Tablelands has tree kangaroos that almost nobody on the standard tourist trail goes looking for. Glow-worm walks in the Gold Coast hinterland are an underrated post-dinner option if you're staying coastal. The point: pick one habitat-rich day per region rather than chasing wildlife across half the country, that's where the disappointing zoo trips come from.
